The process of making a good sarong

In the Netherlands i've made the designs for the sarongs. I have been traveling to Indonesia and looked for the best quality rayon available.

Rayon is available in many different qualities. When you buy it on the beach somewhere on your holiday, you can be sure the quality is not good at all and it has a print.

We use just rayon quality no. 1 this is the best

quality. The material is strong, supple, feels very soft and doesn't get hot from the sun. Rayon quality 1 almost does not crease.

The colours will stay deep and bright for many, many years cause the sun or washing will not fade the colours.

Oke i will explain how they make the sarongs. The material will first be cut of in the right sizes. Than they draw the desing wit hot wax on the sarongs so the colours will stay separated.

When the wax is dried they put the sarongs at working height and they tighten them between wooden beams.

Now the sarongs are ready to be painted in many different colours from neon-pink till deep black. They colour the sarongs with sponges. Every sarong is unique cause they are handmade.

When the sarongs are dried up they give them a special treatment what the call 'water glass'. This is to make the colours more deep and intens.

After this treatment the sarongs must rest for some days. Than the sarongs will be washed a lot of times with clean water until the colours don't spread anymore.

After that the sarongs will be cooked in hot water until all pieces of wax are gone.

The sarongs will be washed again a few times and than the are ready to drie in the sun! Waiting for the ship to bring them to the Netherlands. This is how the sarongs are made!
